WiNG How-To Guide Secure Beacons - Configuration

Pre-Requisites:
Requirements:
The following requirements must be met prior to attempting this configuration:
·        One (or more) RF Switches are installed and operational on the network.
·        One (or more) Access Ports configured and adopted by the RF Switch.
·        One (or more) WLAN profiles are configured and assigned to adopted radios.
·        A Windows XP workstation is available with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox to perform Web UI configuration.
·        One (or more) wireless workstations are available to verify the SSID in the beacon is disabled.

·        The reader has read the Motorola RFS Series Wireless LAN Switches - WiNG System Reference Guide.
Components Used:
The information in this document is based on the following Motorola hardware and software versions:
1 x RFS6000 Version 3.3.
 5 x AP300s.
Configuration:
The following section outlines the configuration steps required to enable secure beacon for a WLAN on an RF Switch:
1)  Enabling Secure Beacons [Section 3.1]:
3.1  Enabling Secure Beacons:
As shown in figures 3.1, enabling secure beacon disables the SSID from being advertised in beacon frame and any WLAN clients scanning for WLAN services will display the SSID as a blank. Clients wishing to associate with the WLAN will have to specify the correct SSID name in their client software before the client will associate to the WLAN.

The SSID is not designed nor intended as a security mechanism. Motorola does not recommend using the SSID as a mode of security.
Disabling SSID broadcasts may have adverse effects on Wi-Fi interoperability for mixed-client deployments. In addition disabling the SSID in the beacon is not recommended for WLANs providing real-time services such as VoIP as roaming can be impacted.

Web UI Configuration Example:
The following configuration example will demonstrate how to enable Secure Beacon on a Hotspot SSID named MOTO-GUEST using the Web UI:
1.  In the menu tree select Network > Wireless LANs. Select the Configuration tab then highlight the SSID to modify and click Edit.

2. In the Network > Wireless LANs > Edit window check the option Secure Beacon. This will disable the SSID name being advertised in the beacon. Click OK.

3. Click Save to apply and save changes.
